Little Lochies and Reception
Our Little Lochies and Reception classes lie at the very heart of life at Lochinver House, both geographically and philosophically. Nestled within a warm, nurturing environment, these early years settings enjoy immediate access to vibrant, free flow play areas and the enchanting adventures found in our extensive outdoor spaces.
Led by qualified and passionate Early Years teachers, supported by experienced teaching assistants, and enriched by our team of specialist staff in Music, PE, Computing, Drama, and Forest School, our youngest learners are immersed in a curriculum designed to inspire curiosity, creativity, and confidence from the very beginning.
We live in a globally connected world, and we believe children’s journeys into education should reflect this. Through the International Early Years Curriculum (IEYC), our pupils engage in rich, thematic units lasting five to six weeks, grounded in enquiry-based learning. These units encourage pupils to make links across their learning, nurturing agency, connection and independent thought. Exciting on-site workshops and off-site trips further enhance the curriculum, while celebrations such as Diwali, Eid, Christmas and UN Day provide joyful opportunities for cultural exploration and shared experiences.

Daily Literacy and Maths learning is woven seamlessly into the timetable. In Literacy, we focus on phonics, early reading and the foundations of writing, with a consistent synthetic phonics approach from Little Lochies through to Reception. Pupils begin to write using a cursive script from the outset, helping to build secure letter formation and confidence without the need for re-learning. In Maths, we follow the Singapore Maths Mastery approach, where every session begins with a real-life problem, encouraging children to think critically and to develop number fluency alongside practical problem-solving skills. There is a strong and intentional focus on the development of soft skills, which are increasingly recognised as vital for future success. In fact, the 2023 World Economic Forum Jobs Report highlights key attributes such as resilience, curiosity, creative thinking and attention to detail, qualities that are embedded within our teaching through our 7 Lochinver Learning Powers of Collaboration, Curiosity, Collaboration, Focus, Initiative, Originality, Reflectiveness and Resilience. These are underpinned by our core values of Honesty, Kindness and Respect, which are at the heart of everything we do. |
Above all, our aim is to know and nurture each and every child, to offer the highest standards of care and education in an environment where they feel safe, supported and celebrated. We develop our children to become resilient, creative, independent and confident learners who are excited about school and eager for what lies ahead.
Transition from Little Lochies to Reception is seamless and automatic, unless it becomes clear that an alternative path would better support the child’s individual needs or those of their peers. We place the wellbeing of every child at the heart of our provision, knowing that a joyful start to school life is essential for long-term wellbeing and success.
We will have children’s positive wellbeing at our heart and we know that happy and positive school experiences are consistently important for good mental health and wellbeing.
